What Is a Taper Roller Bearing?
Taper roller bearings are a type of bearing that helps parts rotate smoothly. They have cone-shaped rollers sitting in a metal cage that fits in between 2 raceways also known as a cup and cone set, giving a ‘tapered’ look that’s wider at one end. It can handle both sideways and up-and-down forces simultaneously.
What Is the Difference Between Tapered and Straight Roller Bearings?
As the name suggests, straight roller bearings are ideal for handling up and down (radial) forces. Tapered roller bearings have a slightly different shape, being wider at one end and narrower on the other, which helps them handle not only up and down forces, but sideways (axial) forces. This gives tapered roller bearings more versatility and they can handle more weight without failing or wearing out quickly.
When Are Taper Roller Bearings Used?
Taper roller bearings are used in applications where parts need to carry heavy loads from various directions and spin smoothly at the same time. This includes:
- Car and truck wheels
- Gearboxes and transmissions
- Agricultural equipment like tractors and harvesters
- Aircraft landing gear
- Railway axle boxes
What Are the Benefits of Tapered Roller Bearings?
Tapered roller bearings are robust and reliable, making them great for heavy-duty industrial applications with heavy loads. They’re also ideal for carrying uneven loads securely, especially when weights are constantly shifting or changing direction. Taper roller bearings perform well in high-stress situations and can be easily customised to fit tight or loose fits.
How Tight Should Taper Roller Bearings Be?
You should typically tighten the taper roller bearing until there’s no play. If the fitting is too tight, it’ll generate too much friction and heat, but if it’s too loose, it’ll wobble and cause vibrations. If you’re unsure how tight to make the roller bearing, it’s safer to make it slightly too loose than too tight to avoid overheating and potential damage further down the line.
