Circlips & E-Clips FAQs

What are Circlips Used For?

Circlips are used to secure components onto shafts or inside housings, preventing them from sliding out-of-place while still allowing rotation. They function as a strong retaining ring, keeping parts exactly where they should be.

What Sizes do Circlips Come In?

Circlips are available in different sizes, starting at 8mm diameter all the way to 310mm diameter, with many increments in between to suit different shafts, housing and engineering requirements. This means we can cover everything from small precision parts to large industrial machinery.

What is the Difference Between A Snap Ring and A Circlip?

Circlips are versatile, higher-thrust retaining rings with lug holes for easy fitting, while snap rings are lug-free, meaning they have no holes. Due to its design, snap rings take up less space which is useful for tight assemblies, but they lack the same load-bearing capacity and ease of controlled installation that circlips provide. Speak to a member of our professional team to find out which one is better suited for your application.

What is the Difference Between an E Ring and A Circlip?

An E ring is similar to a circlip, but looks different as it’s shaped like the letter E. E rings are pushed sideways onto a shaft groove, making them quick to fit and remove. Circlips are designed so that, once fitted into a groove, their ends come very close to touching each other.

How do you Install A Circlip?

To install a circlip, you’ll need circlip pliers that fit into the small holes on the lugs of the circlip. For an external circlip, the pliers are used to expand the ring so it can slide over the shaft and snap into place. For an internal circlip, the pliers are used to compress the ring so it can be fitted into a groove inside the hole. Once released, the circlip springs into place, securing the component.
